What Gearing Can I Use?

For Adults gearing is normally gearing is unrestricted so you can use any outlined above

Most 250m Velodromes like Manchester Velodrome restricts gearing in it's Accreditation and Training sessions to 84 inches (Imperial Gear Chart) for Adults and 74 inches for Children, see the Velodrome Shop Track Cycling Gear Charts above for details of how to achieve these setups, gearing in racing is obviously unrestricted for adults

For smaller Velodromes that are around 140m such as Calshot Velodrome gearing is restricted for all events to below 84 inches due to the steepness of the banking, see the Velodrome Shop Track Cycling Gear Charts above details for how to achieve these setups.

Top Tip : A lot of experimentation with gearing has been carried out over the years with smaller Chainrings found to offer a faster pick-up/acceleration than larger Chainrings, for example you'll find 47x14 easier to pedal/accelerate than 50x15 even though they both give a 90 inch gear. What Chainring/Sprocket/Chain Size Do I Have/Do I Need?

1/8th or 3/32 Gauge

The vast majority of Chainrings/Sprockets are 1/8th in gauge/thickness as this is the industry standard size for Track Cycling, however it could still be the case that you have a 3/32. Chainsets are not Gauge specific, they will work with both Gauges, it's Chains, Chainring and Sprockets that are available in 1/8th or 3/32, product descriptions on our website clearly state if the item is not 1/8th, however 3/32 for dedicated Track equipment is incredibly rare now.

BCD

This refers to the Bolt Circle Diameter of a Chainring/Chainset, in order to ensure a chainring fits your Chainset you need to make sure the BCD match on both items. Our website clearly states the BCD for each Chainset and Chainring but if you want to measure your items to make sure you are purchasing a compatible item, use the following guidelines - 



Measuring BCD: This 110 mm BCD ring measures 64.7 mm center-to-center (or, from left side to left side, or right side to right side --easier to measure).
Multiplying this dimension by 1.701 will give you the actual BCD for a 5-bolt chainring.

The majority of Track Chainsets are 144BCD however 135BCD and 130BCD also exist, be sure to carefully check your equipment and consult our website prior to purchasing as both the Chainset and Chainring have to be identical BCD to work together.
